Phishing and Spoofing: What they are and how to report it

Identity Theft
What is identity theft?
Identity theft takes place when an unauthorized person uses your personal information to open accounts or complete transactions under your name.

How does it happen?
Surprisingly, identity theft is most often committed through someone you know or someone that has access to your personal account information. It can also happen when someone steals your wallet or purse, opens your mail, goes through your trash, makes phone calls requesting private information, or sends you fraudulent e-mails (phishing). View our tips on how to prevent identity theft.

How we can help.

Signs that Someone may be Stealing your Identity
The signs can vary, but typical indicators of fraud and/or stolen identity include:

  • One of your creditors informs you that they have received an application for credit with your name and Social Security number.
  • Incoming calls or letters state that you have been approved or denied by a creditor to which you never applied.
  • You receive credit card, utility, or telephone statements in your name and address for which you never applied.
  • You no longer receive your credit card statements, or you notice that not all of your mail is delivered to you. Your credit card statement includes unusual purchases.
  • A collection agency tells you they are collecting for a defaulted account established with your identity, but you never opened the account.
If you think your identity has been stolen:

  • Visit Glacier Hills Credit Union or call us at (262) 338-1888. We will close any affected accounts and place fraud alerts where necessary.
  • Contact one of the 3 major credit bureaus. Ask for a free copy of your report and that an alert be placed on your file.
    • TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289
    • Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
    • Experian: 1-888-397-3742
  • Contact any other affected financials or creditors.
  • File a report with your local police department and retain a copy for your records.
  • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. 1-877-IDTHEFT (438-4338).
  • Complete an Identity Theft Affidavit.
Depending on your situation, you may need to take the following additional steps:
  • Order a copy of your credit report after 3 months to verify that corrections have been made and there is no other suspicious activity.
  • Report missing/stolen Social Security Cards at 1-800-772-1213.
  • Report any mail theft to the Post Office and any fraudulent charges to your phone company.
